Kentucky sets a high bar for structural pest control insurance. Under KRS 217B.516, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture will not issue or renew a structural pest management company registration until you furnish a liability insurance policy, or certification of one, of not less than $1,000,000, maintained at that amount for the whole registration period.
That is a liability insurance requirement specifically; the statute does not offer a surety bond as an alternative for the main limit. As an independent insurance agency working with pest control companies, Reasons Insurance can help you check whether the policy, the deductible and the renewal date line up with what the department expects.

KRS 217B.516 requires a liability insurance policy or certification of that policy, in an amount of not less than $1,000,000. That is far higher than many neighboring states, and it means a thin policy with a low limit and an umbrella that does not schedule the right coverage needs a close look.
The department may accept a deductible of up to $5,000. If you have not satisfied a deductible on a prior legal claim, the deductible is not accepted unless you furnish a security bond or other insurance that covers it. Raising your deductible to save premium can create a registration problem.
If the coverage becomes unsatisfactory and you do not replace it after notice, the department cancels the company's registration. The statute then makes it unlawful for any employee or agent of the company to perform structural pest management until coverage is fixed and the registration is reinstated.
KRS 217B.538 makes registration mandatory for anyone who acts as, advertises as or offers to act as a structural pest management company. Each registration costs $75 and expires on December 31, with renewal applications due on or before January 1. Because the department will not renew without proof of the $1,000,000 coverage, a policy that renews in late December needs to be bound and certified in time.
The department must be notified at least ten days before any reduction you request or any cancellation by the insurer. If your policy term and the registration year do not match, plan certificate updates around both dates.
KRS 217B.516 ends with a reminder that complying with the chapter does not relieve anyone from liability for damage caused by pesticide use. Meeting the $1,000,000 minimum keeps your registration; it does not decide whether a particular claim is covered. That depends on your policy's insuring agreement, exclusions and endorsements.
The statute also notes that the insurer's total and aggregate for all claims is limited to the face of the policy. If several claims hit in one policy year, an aggregate limit can be used up faster than a per-occurrence limit suggests. Ask how your aggregates are structured.
Termite treatment and wood-destroying insect inspections for home sales are common in Kentucky. A claim based on an inspection report can arrive years after the work. General liability may not respond to an error in a written report the way you expect, so we look at how errors and omissions coverage fits with your general liability.

KRS 217B.516 requires a liability insurance policy of not less than $1,000,000, maintained throughout the registration period, before the department issues or renews a structural pest management company registration. This is a registration minimum, not a recommendation.
Not for the main requirement. KRS 217B.516 calls for a liability insurance policy or certification of one. A security bond is mentioned only as a way to cover an unsatisfied deductible.
The department may accept a deductible of up to $5,000. If a deductible from a prior legal claim was not satisfied, you must furnish a security bond or other insurance covering the deductible.
December 31 of the year it is issued. Renewal costs $75 and is due on or before January 1, and it requires proof of the financial responsibility in KRS 217B.516.
The department must receive at least 10 days' notice. If coverage becomes unsatisfactory and is not replaced after notice, the department cancels the registration and the company's employees may not perform structural pest management until it is reinstated.
